The daughter of a journalist Luke and his wife Martha Henrietta (born of the Rautensttrauch) Jones was born Virginia, Clara Jones, in St Louis, Missouri. Her family had its roots back in St. Louis in 1797, including Captain James Piggott, a great grandfather and founder of East St. Louis, Illinois.
