He is one of the prestigious all-rounder Sri Lankan cricketers; understood for his striking exhibitions and is well known to upset ODI cricket with his attacking and dangerous batting.

He learned at St. Servatius College, Matara; where his cricketing ability was broke down and sharpened by G.L. Galappathy (his school head) and Lionel Wagasinghe (his school cricket mentor). His presentation was good to the point that he was chosen as the chief of St. Thomas’ – St. Servatius Cricket Encounter Team in 1988.

In 1988, in the Outstation Segment, he was declared as the “Spectator Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year”. That year, at the Observer School Cricket Awards, he got the honors for the “Best All-rounder” and “Best Batsman”.
