Rakesh was destined to a Punjabi father from Bareilly (in Uttar Pradesh) and a Bengali mother from Delhi.
His folks came to Mumbai looking for work and remained in a carport.
He was brought into the world in a stable beside the carport in Versova, where he guardians used to remain.
He lost his dad at 16 years old, after which he dropped out his filmmaking course in Pune, returned to Mumbai to remain with his family, and later begun functioning as an associate chief.
He began his vocation by helping movie chief Harnam Singh Rawail in Sunghursh (1968) featuring Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala and Sanjeev Kumar.
At first, he used to win around 200 (INR) every month.
In spite of the fact that he needed to be an entertainer and even got better than average acting chances, his acting profession didn’t take off.
In 1980, he set up a creation organization called FilmKraft, under which his first generation, Aap Ke Deewane (1980), was a film industry flop, however his next film under it, Kaamchor (1982), was a hit.

In 2000, 2 unidentified aggressors shot 2 slugs at him, one in the arm and other in his chest, close to his office on Tilak Road at Santacruz West in Mumbai on a Friday evening. Fortunately, Rakesh recouped rapidly, got into his vehicle and headed to the Santacruz police headquarters, after which he was taken to the Nanavati Hospital, where Dr. Sharad Pandey, father of on-screen character Chunky Pandey, effectively worked him.
